In this half-day workshop, participants will create a one-inch scale storybook chair vignette inspired by a favorite literary tale. Students will begin with a pre-made miniature chair and learn finishing techniques specific to 1:12 scale, including layered paint application, controlled distressing, and subtle aging to suggest use and history. Participants will construct a small handmade miniature book, focusing on proportion, scale illusion, and surface detailing. The scene will be grounded on a textured grassy base, where students will learn methods for building realistic terrain at
a small scale using simple, repeatable techniques. Additional elements such as light botanical growth, including handmade clay mushrooms climbing ivy, florals, a small beverage detail, and optional soft furnishings will be added to create a quiet, narrative moment. While the workshop follows a guided structure, each finished piece is highly individual. Students are encouraged to interpret their story freely and may incorporate a small number of personal items into their vignette. By the end of the workshop, each participant will leave with a completed, display-ready one-inch scale miniature that emphasizes storytelling through finish, composition, and restraint.
Students should bring the following basic tools to class: Small paint brushes suitable for detail work, acrylic paints in preferred colors (neutrals and earth tones suggested). Craft knife or Xacto, small scissors, two or three accessories they would like to include, and tweezers.
